Job Description

In an effort to expand access to the Deaf community, UAF Deaf Services, managed by Disability Services, is seeking ASL interpreters to provide on-site interpreting for UAF-affiliated individuals and guests participating in a variety of activities. Interpreters will be assigned as needed per request, with no minimum number of hours per pay period. Interpreters will have the opportunity to accept available assignments. Assignments regularly include academic lectures, professional meetings, performances and events, student appointments, and other activities associated with regular university business. Assignments may occur during regular business hours (M-F 8 am-5 pm), evenings, and weekends. Interpreters will be supported by teams and administrators as appropriate.

Flexibility, ability to work with diverse populations, sensitive to the needs of others, ability to respond to changes in the interpreting environment. Employees should be able to communicate effectively as an advocate for clients and be empowered to speak with administrators regarding barriers experienced by any interpretation service participants. Employees will participate in training sessions required by administrators, such as FERPA, Protection of Minors, Title IX, and various safety trainings.

Minimum Qualifications:

ABILITY TO: Accurately interpret spoken language to American Sign Language and interpret sign to spoken for lecture classes, physical education classes, labs, meetings, and various assignments as scheduled; follow and give verbal and written directions; attention to detail; basic understanding of ADA and Deaf culture.

No or very limited physical effort required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Work is normally performed in a typical interior classroom/conference room/office environment. Must provide their own transportation and parking to each designated assignment location.

Prior experience as a professional ASL interpreter required. Align with Deaf community standards and expectations.

Preferred Experience: Certified as an ASL interpreter for K-12 or any RID/BEI certification level
Preferred Education: completion of degree in an accredited Interpreter Training Program.

Position Details:

Starting rate - $60.00/hr
